Centre-Back: Per Mertesacker

Arsenal’s towering defender, Per Mertesacker has admitted that the Gunners have several defensive problems in the wake of their 3-2 defeat at Stoke City.

The Gunners looked to be back to winning ways after two back to back wins over Southampton and West Brom respectively before their shock defeat to Mark Hughes’ side on Saturday.

Mertesacker says 1-0 wins is the best way for Arsenal to be successful at the moment

Speaking to reporters after the match, Mertesacker agreed there are problems and blamed having to shuffle things around: ”We have a few problems.
“We have had a couple of games in the last two weeks so we had to shuffle around a bit and sometimes when you’re not used to a position, you can find yourself one or two yards from the right position.
“That’s not an excuse – overall we lacked a lot of things, especially in the first half, and we tried to turn it around and keep our chins up to give ourselves a much better position.”

Mertesacker was forced to partner Calum Chambers at the heart of the Gunners defence against Stoke as Arsene Wenger rested Laurent Koscielny ahead of the clash with Galatasaray.

The German international will be hoping that the Frenchman returns to action in the Champions League and is able to keep up a consistent partnership throughout the hectic festive period.
